MON 8-29

Warm-up:
CNN Student News - new sheet for the week

Lesson/Assignment:

  • Students participated in a simulation of the Stamp Act that led to the Revolutionary War. 
  • There was an "elected" king, tax collectors, and colonists, who were taxed M&M's for the king's profit for qualities or characteristics possessed by individual students such as...hair color, siblings, articles of clothing, materials possessed, etc.  
  • The king ended up with most of their M&M's, and the "colonists" grew quite irate at the injustice :)
  • Students completed a reading and reflection at the end to learn why colonists began to rebel and protest the British royalty.


Homework:Finish reading/questions; answer in complete sentences.

  • Students added detailed pictures to each of their 10 Unit 2 Vocabulary flashcards.
  • Students played a new review game, Quizizz, to review for their test tomorrow.  Students were expected to record their incorrect answers on a tracking sheet; they should use this information to guide their studying at home.

Students participated in "The Amazing Race" in teams to get a wealth of information on life during colonial times in a competitive amount of time (candy may have been involved...)

Finish guided notes for chapter four if you didn't in class.

Warm-up:
Today we began watching CNN Student News as our warm-up.  While watching, students completed the viewing guide which is due Friday. 

Lesson/Assignment:

  • Students received their Unit 1 Tests back today - my apologies for the delay!
    • Grades are updated in PowerSchool as two separate assignments.  The multiple choice was one assignment worth 100 points, and the short answer was one assignment worth 30 points (so about 1/3 of a test grade).  
    • We went over the questions together, but students are welcome to discuss their test results with me during team time this week if needed.  
  • Students worked on a concept map (see image below) to process their notes on Pilgrims and Puritans.  
Homework:
  • Finish at least 2/3 (15 outer boxes) of the concept map using your notes by tomorrow.
  • If you still need the notes, the fill-in handout AND powerpoint slides are on last Wednesday's post; just scroll down until you find it.

Warm-up:
Pop Quiz on Pilgrims terms from Monday

Lesson/Assignment:

  • Students watched a "song" on the Mayflower.  They answered the following questions:
    • What were people fined/imprisoned for back in England in the early 1600s?
    • Describe the different groups aboard the Mayflower. (at least 3 groups)
    • Where did they stay when they got to Plymouth? What happened the first winter?
  • Students played the "paper clip game" and had a discussion on the role of "laws" in our society, as a way to understand the purpose/need for the Mayflower Compact.
  • Students read "The Mayflower Compact" and analyzed the document by paraphrasing the 3 paragraphs on the right AND answering the 3 accompanying questions in their notebook.

Students completed an identification sheet using their device to briefly research some of the important colonial figures we will be learning about in the upcoming weeks.

Classwork: (finish for HW if you didn't in class)

  • Students completed a "13 Colonies Map" that labeled the 13 original colonies, important cities, and important water bodies.  Students then color-coded the map based on the 3 categories of colonies.  (use links in previous post to finish labeling)

Thursday's Test - Preview

Primary Source Documents for Thursday's test.

Students are not required to read the above documents ahead of time, but are encouraged to preview them to get a feel for the content, as they will be answering questions on all four primary sources on the test.




TUESDAY IN-CLASS

Warm-up:
1) Identify the meaning of each letter in S.O.A.P.S. and write one related question that you are expected to answer for each letter.
** Students also received their first quizzes back, as well as their notecards that were due last Wednesday.  Quizzes will be stored in the classroom, but students had the opportunity to ask about any missed questions before they returned them to me.

Lesson/Assignment
We watched several short video clips to supplement their knowledge

Warm-up:

Students finished the Venn Diagram that was assigned last Thursday comparing Pizarro and Cortes.  (3 differences and 3 similarities)

Lesson/Assignment:
We discussed a reading strategy for primary source documents called "S.O.A.P.S."  
Students practiced this strategy with the first primary source account from Friday's readings. Students recorded their responses on a SOAPS handout.

Homework:
Finish SOAPS assignment if necessary.
